Viddal Riley has won his IBF cruiserweight eliminator bout - here’s a look behind the scenes of the routine that drove his performance

To spectators, boxing matches are won in the ring. Twelve rounds of intensity, pressure and precision and then it’s over - sometimes even sooner.

To the athletes involved and their teams that support them, this couldn’t be any further from the truth. The work that goes into winning a boxing match takes months. It’s not just sparring. Making weight, getting enough rest, and ensuring fitness levels are absolutely optimal are all key. When fight night finally comes around, it is the culmination of months of dedication, hard work and following a strict routine.

As part of this routine, nutrition is vital. A fighter must provide exactly what their body needs, often from limited caloric intake, when trying to make weight. High-protein meals are essential, with plenty of carbs for energy. Every bite counts - which is where snacking often becomes an issue.

When Viddal Riley took on and beat Mateusz Masternak this weekend in an IBF cruiserweight title eliminator, he lined himself up for a shot at the IBF cruiserweight title. But not only that, he also displayed how dedication and hard work earn results. We recently got an insight into what Viddal’s preparation and training looks like behind the scenes, and the role that nutrition plays.

How nutrition plays a key role in Viddal’s routine

Viddal Riley told us his focus, when it comes to lunches and dinners, is high-protein foods with plenty of vitamins and minerals. 220 grams of protein, plenty of carbohydrates and all the nutrients required to fuel workouts and recovery, every single day.

When it comes to the source of the protein, Viddal says he will usually opt for animal protein sources, and a mixture of smaller, nutritious snacks throughout the day. These can range from Kings Jerky to an oat-based snack bar, some nuts or iquid protein.

The importance of convenience

Keeping things simple, and having reliable sources of protein you can always go to is the way to stay on track when the margins are so fine and the stakes so high. When travelling, training and sticking to deadlines, the importance of convenience in your protein sources can’t be overstated.

Riley has spoken about always having protein on hand, including keeping Kings products in his kit bag when he’s on the move. Options like jerky and biltong offer a practical way to supplement intake throughout the day, fitting around training, rather than interrupting it.

You don’t need to be stepping into the ring to take value from this. Whether you’re training for competition or just trying to stay on track, the same principles apply. Keep it simple, stay consistent, and make sure your nutrition supports the work you’re putting in.
